Mazda2 Updated 17/04/2005 - Mazda Motor Corporation has released a freshened Mazda Demio with revised styling, improved fuel economy and a host of mechanical updates. Known as Mazda2 in overseas markets including Australia, the freshened Demio goes on sale today at Mazda, Mazda Anfini and Mazda Autozam dealerships throughout Japan. The revised Australian Mazda2 lineup, comprising Neo, Maxx and Genki models, arrives about July. The new Mazda2 features improved fuel efficiency with all models exceeding Japan’s 2010 fuel economy standard by five per cent. Furthermore, all models have been certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SU-LEV) to meet the 2005 emissions reduction standard of 75 per cent. Australian specification cars move from Euro Step II to the tougher Euro Step III emission compliance. The Mazda2’s 1.5-litre engine maintains its power and torque peaks of 82 kilowatts and 141 Newton meters. However, mechanical revisions improve torque delivery below 3000rpm, while an electronic throttle provides a more linear acceleration feel. The car has also adopted RX-8-like electric power steering. Automatic models will come with Mazda’s Activematic manual shift control function, while the five-door hatchback’s body is now stiffer, improving the Mazda2’s class leading dynamics. The new Mazda2’s exterior features a more distinctive, prominent design. Neo and Maxx models give a “warm” and more modern impression with its enlarged headlamps, and by reducing the prominence of the front grille and front and rear bumpers. The Genki boasts design changes to the front grille and other aeroparts and smoke-colored rear combination lamps — all of which render a far sportier external facade. New colors include Iris Blue mica, Mocha mica, Carbon Grey mica and the limited-availability Blazing Yellow Pearl Mica, which is exclusive to Genki. Inside there are a host of comprehensive trim changes and Maxx and Genki models now come with a retractable “flip” key. The Mazda2 remains a safety leader, offering six airbags and ABS brakes across all models. Other safety equipment includes front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, anti-whiplash front seats and an intrusion-minimising brake pedal that reduces the chance of foot, ankle and lower leg injuries. As well as the long list of safety features, standard equipment includes air conditioning, a CD player, 14-inch tyres, central locking, power steering and an engine immobiliser.
