CAR SALES STRONG IN MAY

CAR SALES STRONG IN MAY

07/06/2005 - The Australian motor vehicle market has continued to generate strong growth, posting its fifth consecutive monthly record of the year in May.

Figures released today by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) show that 83,730 vehicles were sold last month – an increase 7 per cent on the previous record for May set last year.

Year to date the total sales of cars, sports utility vehicles (SUVs) and trucks is now running 5.5 per cent ahead of last year when an all-time record of 955,215 was set.

“At the current rate of growth, the motor vehicle market is well on track to reach the Chamber’s forecast of 980,000 sales by the end of the year,” said the FCAI Chief Executive, Peter Sturrock.

“Given that interest rates on motor vehicle finance remain relatively low and the five percent tariff cut at the beginning of the year improved the value-for- money proposition of many models, we believe the market will continue to run ahead of last year’s levels,” said Mr Sturrock.

A boom in small car sales was the main driver of market growth in May.

The Small passenger car segment rose 24.3 percent over the same month last year, accounting for 3,429 of the total market’s 5,451 increase.

Other major contributors to the growth were the Medium car segment which was up 910 sales (27.6 per cent) and the Light car segment which increased by 818 or 12.3 per cent.

In the SUV Market the SUV Medium segment continued its long term growth trend – this time up 856 vehicles or 16.6 percent on the same month last year.

Year-to-date the SUV Medium segment is up 41.0 per cent over the same period last year while the total Sports Utility Market is up by 12.1 per cent for the year so far.

The top selling motor vehicle brand in May was Toyota with 16,841 or 20.1 per cent share of the market, ahead of Holden with 15,465 (18.5 per cent), Ford (11,177 and 13.3 per cent) and a resurgent Mitsubishi with 5,382 or 6.4 per cent.

On a year-to-date basis, Toyota continues to lead the market with 76,431 sales, 3311 units ahead of Holden.

New Peugeot 307 Engines

New Peugeot 307 Engines

17/05/2005 - The popular Peugeot 307 is now available with a new range of diesel engines, boasting the very latest in HDi engine technology.

The two new power plants, a 1.6 litre and a 2.0 litre, are both equipped with particulate filters, offering improved power, torque and fuel economy over the engine they replace.

The 1.6 litre HDi engine is available in the 307 hatch and Touring, and compared to the previous generation 2.0-litre 307 HDi, the new 1.6-litre version is 21 percent more powerful, producing 80 kW instead of 66 kW at the same 4,000 rpm.

Even more significant is the increase in engine torque. This increases from 205 Nm at 2,000 rpm to 240 Nm at 1,750 rpm

The new 2.0 litre engine is available in the Touring only, boasting 100kW of power and an impressive 320Nm of torque.

In terms of fuel economy, the two new engines offer even better consumption figures.

. The new 307 XSR HDi 1.6 averages an outstanding 6.1 litres/100 km in the City Cycle, and 4.3 litres/100 km in the highway cycle. The 307 XSR Touring 2.0 litre HDi boasts the figures of 7.3 litres/100km and 4.7 litres/100km.

The combined fuel consumption figures make this Peugeot 307 one of the most economical cars available in Australia.

Performance is also brisk, with the 2.0 litre Touring HDi accelerating from a standstill to 100 km/h in 10.1 seconds, and the 1.6 litre Hatch HDi in only 11.2 seconds.

The fitment of an intercooler, which was not fitted to the previous 2.0-litre version further, improves efficiency.

Furthermore, the 307 HDi is compliant with strict ‘Euro 4 legislation’, as it eliminates particles by means of its particulate filter resulting in a very clean emission, and has low outputs of harmful greenhouse gasses (CO2 129 g/km).

The award-winning 307 HDi comes with a high level of specification as standard, including 16 inch aluminium alloy wheels, climate control air conditioning, anti-lock brakes with EBFD and six air bags.

CAMRY IS A STRETCH

CAMRY IS A STRETCH

11/05/2005 - An Australian-made Toyota Camry is turning heads in Japan as it transports VIPs visiting the 2005 World Expo Aichi.

The specially modified black Camry stretch limo will remain in Japan for the remaining five months of the Expo alongside a regular Australian-made Camry Azura.

Federal Minister Mark Vaile was the first dignitary to travel in the car and on April 21 it was part of Prime Minister John Howard’s cavalcade to Expo.

Commissioner-General for Australia to Expo 2005, Andrew Todd, said the unusual stretch Camry is turning plenty of heads in Japan.

“People do tend to stop in the street and stare at the car, especially with its Victorian number plates,” said Mr Todd.

“It is a great coals to Newcastle story having two Australian-built Camrys here in Nagoya, the home of Toyota.

“Toyota Australia has been a wonderful and generous supporter of Expo 2005, not only financially but also by providing these two fine Australian-built Camrys used to transport Australian dignitaries, including State Premiers and Ministers.”

Toyota Australia is a major partner with the Australian Government in Australia’s participation at the World Expo.

Aichi prefecture is the home of Toyota Motor Corporation and is Victoria’s sister state in Japan.

The black stretch Camry was extended by 400mm in length to provide luxurious legroom in the rear seat for VIPs being hosted by the Australian Pavilion.

Sydney company Accessible Transit Specialists (ATS) completed the work on the Altona-built Camry on behalf of Toyota Australia.

As part of the conversion, a DVD and satellite navigation system was built into the car with display screens mounted behind the front seats so that the VIPs can follow the route they are travelling or watch movies while being transported.

ATS developed the vehicle over five months, including comprehensive static testing to ensure the standard Camry’s crashworthiness was not compromised.

Toyota head office has also provided a fleet of environmentally friendly buses to transport the estimated 15 million visitors around the massive Expo site, which covers 173 hectares (about 430 acres).

These include 65-seater fuel cell hybrid buses that demonstrate Toyota’s expertise in the use of hydrogen as a fuel source.

Toyota regards the fuel cell hybrid bus running on hydrogen as the ultimate eco vehicle as it carries 65 passengers in near silence and emits only water vapour. Toyota also developed a special fleet of smaller buses for the Expo site that are powered by clean CNG (compressed natural gas) engines.

KIA CERATO FIVE DOOR

KIA CERATO FIVE DOOR

18/04/2005 - If you thought you’ve seen a Kia Cerato without a boot, you are not seeing things........a handful of five door versions of Kia’s small sedan have slipped into the Australian market and they are flowing through selected Kia dealers as used cars.

“When we launched the Kia Cerato last year our plan was that the sedan would be followed by the five door Cerato a few months later,” explains Edward Butler, General Manager of Kia Automotive Australia. “For this reason, we brought into Australia for the launch a number of Cerato hatchbacks to be used for the launch and dealer training.”

“But the Cerato has proved to be such an outstanding success for Kia in Australia that our entire build allocation is taken up by the demand for the sedan. Therefore, our plans to launch the five door as a new model have had to be put, and remain, on hold. But this has left us with a not inconsiderable number of used five doors, along with vehicles that we had pre-ordered for a fleet customer, and we are now releasing these cars via our dealers for sale,” explains Mr Butler.

The Kia Cerato hatch comes with an upgraded equipment package over the sedan, including 16 inch alloy wheels, leather steering wheel and gear knob and silver tone dash treatment, added to the standard equipment package that includes remote central locking, electric windows, Air-Conditioning and CD player. Mechanically, there are two versions of the Kia Cerato five door. The manual gearbox version has the same 2.0 litre 101 kW engine as the Cerato sedan, while automatic is equipped with the new Kia CVVT 2.0 litre engine with 106 kW.

While it is shorter than the sedan – 4480 mm vs. 4340 mm long – the Cerato hatch has the same height and width and, therefore, shares the same spacious passenger compartment as the sedan. The hatch offers a 345 litre boot, which may be expanded with the split folding rear seats.

The Kia Cerato sedan has a recommended retail price in Australia of $18,990 for the manual version and $20,990 for the automatic version, including on road costs.

“It is still our plan to launch the Kia Cerato hatch in Australia and the final specification has yet to be decided. Therefore we will not be issuing a recommended retail price for a new car, and as all of these cars are being sold as used cars, legally we cannot provide a price for them,” explains Mr Butler.  “But Kia Cerato hatch buyers can rest assured that this new model will represent the same outstanding value for money as the rest of the Kia range. However, they will have the added benefit, as well as the stylish good looks of a European styled hatch, for a brief while at least, of rarity value!”

Mazda2 Updated

Mazda2 Updated

17/04/2005 - Mazda Motor Corporation has released a freshened Mazda Demio with revised styling, improved fuel economy and a host of mechanical updates.

Known as Mazda2 in overseas markets including Australia, the freshened Demio goes on sale today at Mazda, Mazda Anfini and Mazda Autozam dealerships throughout Japan.

The revised Australian Mazda2 lineup, comprising Neo, Maxx and Genki models, arrives about July.

The new Mazda2 features improved fuel efficiency with all models exceeding Japan’s 2010 fuel economy standard by five per cent. Furthermore, all models have been certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SU-LEV) to meet the 2005 emissions reduction standard of 75 per cent.

Australian specification cars move from Euro Step II to the tougher Euro Step III emission compliance.

The Mazda2’s 1.5-litre engine maintains its power and torque peaks of 82 kilowatts and 141 Newton meters. However, mechanical revisions improve torque delivery below 3000rpm, while an electronic throttle provides a more linear acceleration feel. The car has also adopted RX-8-like electric power steering.

Automatic models will come with Mazda’s Activematic manual shift control function, while the five-door hatchback’s body is now stiffer, improving the Mazda2’s class leading dynamics.

The new Mazda2’s exterior features a more distinctive, prominent design. Neo and Maxx models give a “warm” and more modern impression with its enlarged headlamps, and by reducing the prominence of the front grille and front and rear bumpers.

The Genki boasts design changes to the front grille and other aeroparts and smoke-colored rear combination lamps — all of which render a far sportier external facade.

New colors include Iris Blue mica, Mocha mica, Carbon Grey mica and the limited-availability Blazing Yellow Pearl Mica, which is exclusive to Genki.

Inside there are a host of comprehensive trim changes and Maxx and Genki models now come with a retractable “flip” key.

The Mazda2 remains a safety leader, offering six airbags and ABS brakes across all models.

Other safety equipment includes front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, anti-whiplash front seats and an intrusion-minimising brake pedal that reduces the chance of foot, ankle and lower leg injuries.

As well as the long list of safety features, standard equipment includes air conditioning, a CD player, 14-inch tyres, central locking, power steering and an engine immobiliser.

More details and pricing for the new Mazda2 range will be announced closer to its Australian launch.

New Volkswagen Fox

New Volkswagen Fox

Wolfsburg, 4. April 2005 - A new, smaller and cleverer Volkswagen called the Fox has arrived. It gives you a maximum amount of car for a minimum amount of money.

It is comfortable, safe and agile. It has two doors, a large tailgate and loads of space. The Fox looks unconstrained and strong. Your first impression will be that this is a Volkswagen. Your second impression will be that it is a Fox. It’s not a Polo, not a Golf, it’s a Fox.

A Complete Car: Low-cost, but not lacking

  • No compromises: The Fox is a complete car despite the carefully budgeted price. It has everything that you expect a real car to have. We do not just mean four wheels, but a very sophisticated chassis (with ABS as standard and optionally with ESP), an optional multi-variable and sliding rear bench, a galvanised and laser-welded body and all perfect functions that have characterised Volkswagen since the first VW designed by Ferdinand Porsche.

  • Sliding rear bench: Inside, the new Fox features logical controls and lots of space. Volkswagen decided to configure the compact car as a four-seater so there are proper seats and enough space for two adults in the rear. The complete rear bench also slides 15 centimetres lengthways and the backrest is split in the middle. Depending on the configuration, the boot volume is between 260 and 1,016 litres.

  • It’s also ideal for city driving: Saying the Fox is very roomy may be going too far, but the feeling of spaciousness and the actual space available are remarkable. The fact is that the Fox is an ideal city car, but is also suitable for long journeys between cities or for holidays.

  • Grown-up: A lack of interior space normally reduces the practicality and comfort of a car. The new Fox is therefore amazingly roomy. There is also a concept behind this. You will definitely not feel cramped with the elbowroom of 1,401 in the front and 1,423 millimetres in the rear — extremely high values for this class. In everyday use, this means that two tall people can sit next to each other without feeling that the car is just a bit too small.

  • Three engines: The new Fox will be launched in Europe with two petrol engines and one turbo diesel (TDI). All of them fulfil the Euro 4 norm and are mounted transversely at the front. The two petrol engines deliver 40 kW / 55 hp and 55 kW / 75 hp. The TDI delivers 51 kW / 69 hp. Thanks to the low maintenance requirement and consumption, the engines provide for low-cost driving fun.

  • Agile handling: Fun and safety were at the forefront during the development of the Fox chassis. You can sense this on every metre of road when you sit behind the four-spoke steering wheel of the new Volkswagen. On the one hand, the Fox is simply fun because it neither understeers nor oversteers too much. It is extremely agile as it whizzes around corners because it simply gives you the deftness of a compact car with large chassis reserves. That is the second positive aspect of this chassis: As, under normal conditions, the car will not be shaken, you are guaranteed a level of active safety that sets the standards in this segment.

Information and details on a possible release in Australia were not available at the time of this press release.

The New Polo

The New Polo

Wolfsburg, 10. March 2005 - In time for its 30th birthday, the new Polo appears optically more dynamic and fresher than ever before. The new front end with its V-shaped radiator grille, in particular, lends the Polo a significantly more striking look.

The new Polo is coming! Based on its well-known virtues, the most recent generation of this all-round talent will remain the benchmark in its class. The Polo's appealing radiance has also remained, although its exterior appears more mature and even more modern. Pre-sale of the new Polo will start on March 14 in Germany.

Despite its improved convenience and safety equipment, the vehicle's prices will remain at the same level. The Polo 1.2, which has an output of 40 kW / 55 hp; the basic TDI, which offers 51 kW / 70 hp, will costs less than the predecessor's entry-level diesel version. Market launch in Germany and the most important European countries will take place at the end of April.

Following the new Passat, the new Polo will be the second Volkswagen to display the new brand face. The entirely redesigned front end bears the escutcheon grille and re-interprets the V topic. From the A-pillars, a striking curve stretches via the bonnet to the radiator grille.

However, the new Polo's face is essentially characterised by its headlights. These are defined as a trapezoidal element, enhanced by the eye-catching, circular element of the main headlights.

Thanks to this front end design, the Polo retains its appealing character, but its modern design style places it in a higher-quality class. In comparison with the predecessor, its redesigned front extends the new Polo by 19 millimetres to 3916 millimetres. Its width (1650 millimetres) and height (1465 millimetres) correspond to the currently available model.

The rear end lends the vehicle a further dynamic touch. Here, the rear window ends in a V shape in the lower frame area, making the Polo appear more lively and sporty when viewed from the rear. The redesigned rear lights also demonstrate character, picking up on the front end's circular elements and clearly setting the tone at the rear of the new Polo.

Regarded from the side, the Polo stands out thanks to a design which is both clear and convincing. Accentuation of the two available body versions is typical of the Polo: whilst the two-door's ascending lateral curve bears coupé-like features, the four-door reveals stature and solidity in its clear design and third side window in the C-pillar.

This most recent generation of the Polo will be available in three equipment levels: "Trendline", "Comfortline" and "Sportline". In addition to the good convenience and safety features familiar from these equipment levels, the new Polo is fitted with further, new details as standard. These include an anti-lock brake system with dual-rate brake assist, electric window lifters in the front, air conditioner (as of Comfortline) and central locking. Until recently, features such as Park Distance Control, Tyre Pressure Monitor and the dipped-beam's "Coming Home" function were exclusively available for luxury class models. The Polo will set the pace with these features, and combines a high-quality, modern design with innovative equipment which meets the requirements of progressive customers.

The new Polo has also been modernised inside. High-quality fabrics in an exclusive and fresh design lend a reviving touch. In addition to the redesigned instrument graphics, new steering wheels are also available.

The new Polo is fitted with front and side airbags on both front seats as standard. An optional head airbag system, in which the curtain airbags inflate to provide protective padding covering the entire side window area, is also available. The Electronic Stabilisation Programme (ESP), which is fitted as standard in engines as of 74 kW / 100 hp, and is optionally available for the other engines, additionally offers effective support for safe driving.

The new Polo demonstrates its first-class qualities as an all-round talent in the diversity of its engines. Five petrol engines with outputs ranging from 40 kW / 55 hp to 74 kW / 100 hp – including an FSI engine – and four state-of-the-art TDI engines with outputs from 51 kW / 70 hp to 96 kW / 130 hp are available.

Access to the Polo's diesel world is provided by a modern 1.4-litre three-cylinder TDI with 51 kW / 70 hp, which replaces the familiar 1.9 SDI. Another new engine, a three-cylinder 1.4-litre TDI with 59 kW / 80 hp, meets customers' wishes for higher output.

Australian specifications and launch details were not available at the time of this release.

Due in showrooms in the second half of 2005, the stylish two-seat Tigra cabrio, three-door Astra SRi Turbo coupe hot hatch and five-door Astra wagon headline the Holden show stand.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director Denny Mooney said Holden would become a force in the four-cylinder market in 2005 and beyond.

“These cars will significantly boost Holden’s small car arsenal. They represent style, great value and performance, and will attract new buyers to the Holden brand, Mr Mooney said.

“We are determined to build and expand Holden’s small car range by taking the best of the best from General Motors and bringing it to market right here in Australia.”

The head-turning Tigra two-door is a sporty and compact convertible which doubles as an ultra-stylish coupe. Winner of the ‘Cabrio of the Year 2004’ award at the Geneva Motor Show, the Tigra roadster has a retractable hard top and looks equally as good with the roof open or closed.

The exciting Tigra is equipped with features including a 1.8 litre 16 valve engine, 16-inch alloy wheels*, cruise control and safety features including ABS and brake assist. The stylish roadster is expected to attract new buyers to the Holden brand.

Holden’s strong-selling Astra range gets even broader with the introduction of Astra SRi Turbo coupe and Astra CDX Wagon.

The three-door Astra SRi Turbo sports hatch coupe features a powerful 2.0 litre, 147kW turbo engine, with 18-inch alloy wheels*, leather trim and advanced active safety technology.

The new-to-Australia Astra wagon, a firm family favourite in Europe, will attract compact wagon buyers. It retains all of Astra sedan’s sleek and stylish design cues, supple ride and handling agility while offering increased carrying capacity and superb interior packaging.

Astra CDX wagon features include a 1.8 litre 16 valve engine, 16-inch alloy wheels*, ABS, driver, passenger and front side impact airbags, cruise control and trip computer.

Astra wagon will also be available in a CD model in the second half of 2005.

No more Toyota Avalon!

No more Toyota Avalon!

18/03/2005 - Toyota Australia will end the production of the Avalon at the end of June 2005 to begin preparations for a range of new locally produced passenger sedans scheduled for release in 2006.

Toyota Executive Director of Sales and Marketing, David Buttner said as the Australian market leader, Toyota was committed to having a strong presence in the Australian large car market with locally made models.

“The production of the Avalon at our Altona plant was our first venture into manufacturing a large six cylinder passenger sedan and we have learned from the experience.

“It has endowed our engineers, production workforce and local manufacturing plant with greater technical capability and versatility and our sales and marketing teams have garnered a greater understanding of customers in this market segment.

“This experience places us in a strong position to deliver a truly modern, refined and exciting products to Australian customers.”

“Avalon has averaged 770 new deliveries a month and current Avalon owners will continue to be supported by Toyota’s Australia wide dealer network with Genuine Parts and quality service. Further, Toyota will continue to enhance its six cylinder model range and is aggressive in its pursuit of additional market share.

Mr Buttner said the next year was essential in preparing the Altona manufacturing plant for the new models in 2006.

“The partial reduction of production capacity in 2005 is intended to prepare for a seamless changeover,” he said.

“The new model will be manufactured to even more modern and stringent standards than are currently employed at our Melbourne plant and the preparation time will accommodate the introduction of a new body welding technique.

“The forecasted increase in volume achieved with the 2006 models and beyond will more than compensate for pause in production,” he said.

New Focus on Small Cars

New Focus on Small Cars

01/03/2005 - The all-new German-engineered Ford Focus will make its Australian debut at the Melbourne International Motor Show this week, poised to deliver the best of European design and German engineering to the small car class.

Powered by an all-new 2.0-litre four-cylinder Duratec 16-valve engine and featuring four variants across two body styles, the Focus range will build on the reputation of quality and outstanding driving dynamics established by its predecessor.

"The new Focus represents a very exciting evolution for this outstanding car," said Ford Australia President, Tom Gorman.

"The original Focus set the benchmark for driving dynamics in the small car segment and the new Focus raises that bar even further. Combined with the powerful new 2.0-litre engine and increased interior comforts, the new vehicle will redefine driving enjoyment in its class."

From launch, the new Focus family will consist of the popular four and five door models across four variants – the CL, LX, Zetec and Ghia. Focus Zetec will be available as a five door hatch only and Ghia as a four-door sedan only.

A sleek European style

The new Focus hatch features a distinctive silhouette, emphasised by the angle of the windscreen and by the fast, sporty rear end design.

"The design of the new Focus is contemporary and distinctive but with very clear ties to the original model," said Gorman. "It is very clearly a Ford Focus with its trademark high rear lamps and distinctive side window graphic."

The vehicle's interior design continues the theme of premium quality through the use of high quality materials and textures, exceptional fit and finish and new features.

The interior creates a 'cockpit feel', ensuring all controls are logically positioned and within easy reach of the driver.

The power to move

The new Focus will feature a powerful new 2.0-litre four-cylinder Duratec engine across all models.

Delivering 107kW of power at 6000rpm and peak torque of 185Nm at 4500rpm, the new engine employs state of the art combustion and catalytic converter technology to deliver high levels of performance and fuel economy, while meeting Euro IV emission levels.

Extremely durable, the lightweight engine was designed to be very efficient, require low levels of maintenance and provide customers with a long service life.

The engine will be matched by the five-speed manual or the optional four-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift.

Poised for smooth driving quality

The original Ford Focus set the benchmark for smooth, sporty driving quality in its class. The new Focus extends that strength to encompass the entire driving experience.

Enhancements under the skin build on seven years' experience with the Control Blade independent rear suspension and a new, stiffer front subframe provides the foundation for chassis elements that have undergone extensive tuning.

"Focus drivers will appreciate enhancements in comfort that have been achieved in the Focus, without sacrificing its signature agility, stability and precise reaction to steering inputs," said Gorman.

The new chassis has been engineered to provide high levels of vibration isolation and stable, confidence-enhancing body control, making it reassuringly comfortable even on coarse Australian roads.

The new vehicle's body structure has also been engineered with a 10 per cent increase in torsional stiffness over its class-leading predecessor.

An all-new electric-hydraulic power-assisted steering system makes low-speed manoeuvres easier while preserving precision on the open road. Larger diameter brakes provide more 'feel', enhanced emergency stopping power and longer brake pad life.

"The new exterior and interior designs, plus a powerful 2.0-litre Duratec engine and new transmissions will strengthen the Focus brand in Australia," says Gorman.

Further product details and pricing will be announced closer to launch.

NEW FIAT CROMA

NEW FIAT CROMA

07/02/2005 - The ‘Fiat Large’, the code name for the range-topping new Fiat, finally has a name.

It will be called the Fiat Croma when it is revealed at the Geneva International Motor Show in March (3-13 March 2005) prior to its Italian on-sale date in June.

Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro and built at Fiat Auto's Cassino factory, the name recalls the famous and successful medium-large saloon that was on sale between 1985 and 1994 with over 450,000 sold during that period.

The dimensions of New Croma - 4.75m (l.) x 1.77m (w.) x 1.60m (h.) with a wheelbase of 2.70m – are an indication of the extraordinary interior space that will be available in this new range.

All Set with New Swift

All Set with New Swift

15/02/2005 - Suzuki Australia will today launch the long awaited, dynamic new Suzuki Swift following its successful preview last year at the Australian International Motor Show.

Set to shake up the light passenger car segment, the Swift, developed for the sophisticated European market, is value packed with its long list of standard features and equipment and its competitive price tag.

A well known Suzuki icon, the original Swift entered the Australian market in 1984 and fast became the benchmark in light car packaging and design. The vehicle was partly responsible for establishing the Suzuki name as a car maker in Australia, and is fondly remembered by owners, enthusiasts and Suzuki personnel alike.

The new Swift will be no exception and has already exceeded sales expectation in its domestic market of Japan.

"The new generation Swift is the perfect combination of design, assembly and attention to engineering detail, it is an exceptional car and we are confident it will be a huge success in Australia," General Manager- Automobiles, Suzuki Australia, Mr. David Le Mottee said.

Available in Australia in a five door manual and automatic hatch, and priced from just $15,990 the sleek and sporty good looks of vehicle are bound to impress.

Powered by a sports tuned 1.5 litre VVT engine, the Swift offers buyers a maximum output of 74kW at 6,000rpm.

The five speed manual transmission features an updated short stroke design with comprehensively enhanced shift linkages that give a firm, quick shift feel. While the four speed automatic transmission includes a gated shift lever that allows the driver to enjoy shifting gears for added exhilaration, a feature that is rarely seen in the super mini vehicle category.

The Swift is the first vehicle in Suzuki's new model line up to hit Australian shores, and the future direction of Suzuki is apparent in the front styling of the vehicle.

The bold front face, clear headlights and wide air dam, provide a sense of stability and solidness as do the large wheels, flared wheel arches and contoured shoulders.

The stylish and sporty feel of the vehicle is a direct response to the feedback received from the Concept S and S2 study models, and is further highlighted through the rear roof end spoiler and wraparound glass surfaces.

The value packed, value for money philosophy of Suzuki has not gone astray on the Swift, with a long list of standard features including, six speaker in dash CD stereo system, easy to operate audio system controls mounted on a leather steering wheel, air conditioning, electric mirrors and windows, power steering, remote keyless entry with hazard lamp answer back, UV reducing glass, dual front SRS airbags and ABS brakes.

Careful consideration has gone into the design of every aspect of the car, with numerous little extras giving the vehicle the edge over its competition.

A major physical benefit for the driver is extensive seat adjustability, which permits comfortable, confident driving and easy pedal operation, each front seat has a fore aft slide range of 240mm making the Swift the best in its class.

The wraparound look of the glass surfaces is continued in the cabin design and helps to create a bright, airy environment in which the driver enjoys excellent all round visibility.

Sporty touches include a three spoke all leather steering wheel, a spherical shift knob and an illuminated ring around the speedometer.

In a styling cue taken from the popular Suzuki GSX R750 motorbike the dash features an easy to read instrument cluster in which the tachometer dial, has its '0' mark positioned at six o'clock, where the eye falls naturally.

A centrally located information display cell shows the time, fuel consumption, and outside temperature.

Clever use of the interior space realises exceptional people and luggage carrying flexibility, with all seats in use the compact Swift has a generous capacity of 213litres, tall enough to allow a large suitcase to be loaded vertically.

Several storage spaces for small, personal items are located around the cabin, including a compartment in the instrument panel, glove box, front and rear cup holders, seatback pocket, front door pockets and a tray under the front passenger seat.

As with all Suzuki vehicles, safety is kept at a premium, with the Swift incorporating the latest technologies for safety and security.

With the opportunity to develop the body of the vehicle from scratch, engineers were able to employ shock absorbing material structures for the bonnet, fenders, wipers and front bumper of the vehicle, assisting in the protection of pedestrians in the event of contact and lessening the severity of injuries.

Other active safety technologies include a four wheel antilock braking system, an electronic brake force distribution system, and a brake assist function. The Swift is also fitted with an immobilizer and features tamper resistant door locks.

"The total package offered by the Swift, illustrates Suzuki's strength of delivering feature packed, value for money products."

"We believe the broad appeal of the Swift we enable us to achieve a sold sales target of 300units per month for the first year."

The base Suzuki Swift is available in a manual and automatic hatch and is priced from just $15,990, while the Swift S is only an additional $2000 with the added extras of fog lamps, alloy wheels, and side and curtain airbags.

A full range of Swift accessories are available from Suzuki dealerships to add comfort, convenience and flair.

The Suzuki Swift comes with Suzuki CustomerCare, providing customers with peace of mind via a three year/100,000km warranty and three year 24 hour roadside assistance.

Honda Gold Wing turns 30

Honda Gold Wing turns 30

05/02/2005 - In the ever-changing world of motorcycling, technological advancements press forward with such irresistible force that very few models survive a production life span of much over a decade.

However, for the past thirty years, the Honda Gold Wing has done much more than merely survive: for five distinct generations, this remarkable machine has continued to create and define an entire segment of the motorcycling experience.

2005 will mark the thirty year anniversary for this legendary Grand Tourer. Starting with a prototype in 1972 developed by Soichiro Irimajiri, the man who directed the design of Honda’s five and six cylinder road racing engines of the 1960’s, the first GL1000 Gold Wing was released for sale in 1975.

The bike opened new possibilities never before considered in terms of an open-class machine with world-class power and transcontinental capabilities. Customers unequivocally took to the Gold Wing in droves, helping to inspire an industry-wide shift toward long distance motorcycling.

Five years later, the GL1100 was introduced with a new emphasis on torque rather than max horsepower, a longer wheelbase for more rider and pillion room, and an air-assisted suspension system for smooth riding.

The Interstate was also introduced in 1980, offering the first Gold Wing available with factory installed fairings, panniers and top box, plus the option of a built-in stereo system.

Another four years, and another 1000cc is added; plus an ultra-luxurious Limited Edition arrives, complete with computerised fuel injection, cruise control and a comprehensive electronic travel computer.

After four years of further intensive development involving testing on 15 different machines in 60 prototype stages, the GL1500 debuted to unanimous acclaim in 1988.

Mr Masanori Aoki, a sport bike enthusiast who led the development of such high performance bikes as the CBR2500RR and CBR600F3, took the honours of working on the next generation Gold Wing in the early 1990’s.

1975 – the GL1000 hits the streets

According to Aoki, his focus was to “build a bike that would keep 80% of the touring capability whilst adding a ‘fun factor’ by giving it the kind of acceleration and handling people normally associate with sporting machines.”

In 1998, a new full-scale model saw the light of day, whilst Honda celebrated the bike’s 20th anniversary a few years earlier in 1995.

In the 21st century, and after over a quarter century in production, the remarkable Gold Wing turns the touring world upside down yet again with the release of a ‘from the ground up’ model – the GL 1800.

This amazing project resulted in Honda patenting no less than 20 technological innovations that were incorporated into this high performance luxury machine.

In 2005, the Gold Wing lights the candles for its unprecedented 30th anniversary and Honda is celebrating by including a beautifully executed set of commemorative emblems on the bike to highlight its innovation and longevity.

There are also new Australian release colours for the ’05 model now available including Bloodstone Red Metallic and Nova Blue Metallic.

The 30th Anniversary Gold Wing comes standard with a six stacker CD, heated grips, front and rear speakers, fog lights, rider’s intercom headsets and nylon Goldwing innerbags for panniers.

Recommended Retail Price is $39,990 plus on road costs.
